Step Back in Time for Two of Central Pennsylvania's Renowned Fall Events
Autumn in Pennsylvania is a magical time... those golden fall days, crisp nights and all the festivals of the autumn season. Not all of our popular fall events are about pumpkins and corn mazes. Two that draw thousands of visitors each year — AACA's Eastern Fall Nationals and the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire — capture the essence of different eras, offering visitors a chance to revel in both the beauty of antique automobiles and the enchantment of a bygone age. When you stay with us at the Londonderry Inn and Estate, you are just a short drive to either of these timeless events.
AACA Eastern Fall Nationals: Celebrating Automotive History
Touted as the largest antique car show and flea market in the world, the American Automobile Club of America (AACA) Eastern Fall Nationals has celebrated antique, vintage and classic cars since its first show in 1955. Each year, car enthusiasts come from all over the world to partake in the massive four-day event. The 2023 event is set for Oct. 3-6 on the grounds and parking lots surrounding Hersheypark and the GIANT Center in Hershey. The first three days of the event are dedicated to a huge flea market covering 9,000+ spaces. Everything and anything automobile-related is for sale — old licenses plates, gas pumps, hood ornaments, vintage signs, vehicle manuals, and car parts and accessories for all types for every model imaginable. This auto flea market is so big it takes days to cover the expansive array of vendor stalls. It's a true paradise for collectors! Alongside the flea market is a car corral, where both individuals and dealers display cars for sale, all at least 25 years old or older.
The highlight of the final day of the AACA Eastern Fall Nationals is the world-class car show, where thousands of meticulously restored and preserved antique automobiles are displayed. Early that morning, crowds gather to watch the cars parade down the streets and onto the show field for the judging event. From vintage Ford Model T's to sleek mid-century Cadillacs, every era of automotive history is well-represented. Enthusiasts can not only admire these cars but also engage with their passionate owners who are often more than happy to share the stories behind their prized possessions.
Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire: Time Travel to the 16th Century
Just a short drive away from Hershey, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire transports visitors back to the 16th century. This immersive experience, which runs from late August through October, is set on the beautiful grounds of Mount Hope Estate in Manheim and offers a glimpse into the Elizabethan era. As you step through the gates, you're greeted by costumed performers, jousting knights and wandering minstrels. You’ll find the festivities and excitement sprawled throughout the 35-acre medieval village. You can watch a Shakespearean play, witness thrilling jousting tournaments, or learn about medieval crafts and traditions like blacksmithing, archery and glass blowing.
One of the hallmarks of the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is its attention to detail. The village is meticulously designed to recreate the look and feel of a 16th-century European market, and the actors stay in character throughout the day, making every interaction feel like a genuine trip through time. The atmosphere is alive with energy, and it's not uncommon to see visitors in elaborate period costumes, fully embracing the spirit of the Renaissance. When hunger strikes, you'll find many delicious food and beverage options at one of the Royal Kitchens and Pourhouses, including the famous giant turkey legs and Mount Hope's own award-winning wine and Swashbuckler beer.
